Cen Chen nodded nonchalantly at the words. “You’re already so excellent; what else could they possibly be dissatisfied with?”
Moreover, no one could influence his thoughts. He had followed his grandmother’s arrangements before simply because he found it troublesome and didn’t want to hear her nagging every day.
“And since you’re so remarkable, he might secretly wish you’d be his own son. Before you revealed your business identity, my father was speculating whether you were a middle-aged man in his forties or fifties,” Cen Chen said, unable to help but laugh. “Did you ever secretly fantasize about me venturing outside and you taking care of me?”
Though he appeared indifferent, he held a flicker of expectation for family in his heart. The part that was missing would now be filled by Ye Qiu.
“Right, and he doesn’t even give me a chance to take care of you,” Ye Qiu said, playfully hugging Cen Chen from behind, resting his head on his shoulder.
Cen Chen had passed the first test with his parents.
He cleared his throat a couple of times, feeling a bit nervous. “So when are we meeting your parents?”
Ye Qiu pondered for a moment before making a phone call to both his father and mother.
Ye Qiu’s mother responded, “It’s great to bring your partner! Your dad and I can show off our cooking skills. Is there anything he can’t eat?”
Ye Qiu thought for a moment and replied, “Um… just make a bit more food.”
The original host came from a modest small county; his parents had worked hard to support his education, ensuring he never lacked for anything. However, he still ended up derailing, complaining after experiencing the splendor of a big city that his parents couldn’t provide a better life, eventually falling into a slump. After graduation, he would lie in his rented room daydreaming about getting rich overnight, yet he still had to call his parents in the county to ask for monthly rent.
After Ye Qiu arrived, he sent a significant amount of money back home. When his parents received their first payment, they were puzzled by the unfamiliar bank account number, thinking they had fallen victim to a scam. Frantically, they reported it to the police and asked around, only to discover that it was indeed money from their son.
Upon learning that the money came from Ye Qiu’s successful entrepreneurial efforts, they no longer wore worried expressions. They danced in the square and took leisurely strolls, and with Ye Qiu constantly sending them new electronic products, they started enjoying life. They even began to travel spontaneously every six months, learning to embrace the broader world.
When they heard that Ye Qiu was bringing his partner home, the two elder parents enthusiastically prepared for the occasion.
Cen Chen observed the prepared gifts, feeling dissatisfied and worried. “What do your parents like most?”
“They’re just happy I found a partner,” Ye Qiu pondered before responding seriously.
Cen Chen: ???
“Honestly, my parents used to fret about whether I’d be single for my whole life,” Ye Qiu admitted with a chuckle.
Even though Ye Qiu repeatedly reassured Cen Chen that his parents didn’t lack anything and that common gifts would suffice, Cen Chen still carried large bags, feeling they weren’t enough, pondering in the taxi if there was something missing.
When Ye Qiu’s parents opened the door with wide smiles, they froze for a moment upon seeing Cen Chen.
Ye Qiu’s mother suddenly understood, exclaiming, “No wonder you told me to prepare more dishes—it turns out you’re bringing home a boy.”
“Dad, Mom.” Ye Qiu, though changed compared to the original host, still bore a familiar look in his features.
Cen Chen was so nervous he nearly stumbled over his words. “Dad, Dad, Mom.”
Ye Qiu’s father, still shocked at the door, was pulled aside by his mother. “Hey, come inside, come inside.”
People tend to be more tolerant of things that are visually pleasing, especially since Cen Chen carried a charm that Ye Qiu lacked. In a glance, he appeared like an intellectual, while Ye Qiu’s mother had always hoped to cultivate her son into a knowledgeable person. Regrettably, Ye Qiu had a mischievous streak, but seeing Cen Chen now behaving like a model child made her heart swell with joy.
Cen Chen breathed a sigh of relief. He had dressed in a shirt paired with a vest today, attempting a student-like appearance, and it seemed to have had some effect.
Yet during their conversation, Ye Qiu’s father remained frowning on the sofa, especially when he learned about Cen Chen’s family background.
He stood abruptly and pulled Ye Qiu into another room, demanding, “Tell me honestly, did you trick this boy out of his money?”
Ye Qiu’s mother stayed behind, comforting the visibly anxious Cen Chen.
Inside the room, Ye Qiu could only smile helplessly.
“How dare you smile! Where did you get your money from?” Ye Qiu’s father questioned, as if the moment he spoke ill of the matter, his son would be kicked out of the family.
How could he, at his age, feel comfortable using money that a child had worked so hard to earn? Wouldn’t that make their family a bunch of leeches living off someone else’s hard work?
As he saw the intensity in his father’s eyes, Ye Qiu slowly replied, “Dad, I’m your son, how could I do such a thing?”
After some explanation, his father reluctantly accepted that his son was indeed successful in his venture, reminding him to be responsible with his newfound wealth.
Ye Qiu nodded obediently, and as they both exited the room, they found Ye Qiu’s mother and Cen Chen relieved that they were now calm.
Ye Qiu’s father, who moments ago had been sullen, was now all smiles; his expressions fluctuated between furrowing his brows and grinning, much to Ye Qiu’s mother’s annoyance as she scolded him for his antics.
Once they left, Ye Qiu’s father paced restlessly in the living room with a heavy sigh.
This made Ye Qiu’s mother irritable. “What’s with all the sighing? It’s so annoying.”
Seeing her paying him attention, Ye Qiu’s father complained, “How can that boy like other boys? Why can’t he just follow the norm and bring home a girl?”
“Well, when the lights are out at night, isn’t it the same? They lie on the same bed,” she retorted.
“You old fool, what do you know?” Ye Qiu’s mother rolled her eyes, replying proudly, “Experts say that sexual orientation is innate and can’t be changed. And you have a good relationship with old Liu next door; why haven’t you two ever shared a bed?”
Ye Qiu’s father shuddered at the thought, and the conversation was dropped.
